3 things I learned while searching for my first travel assignment

So you've decided to do travel therapy and the adrenaline (maybe a tad bit of anxiety) is high as you look at all the possibilities before you! I was SO excited when I started looking at potential travel sites that I'm pretty sure it was all through rose colored glasses and my reasoning skills went right out the door haha

BUT as I went through the interview process, three key things stuck out to me and so naturally I'm sharing them with you in case you find yourself in a similar spot.

1. don’t apply to a million jobs because you’re worried there might not be one available.

Be intentional. You don't want to waste your time or the time of the facility that you're interviewing with.

2. make sure there is available housing in the area you are looking!

I was >this< close to being out in the most rural part of Montana for my first assignment BUT there was no housing in the area and the closest available housing was 45 mins plus away and I didn’t want to do that in the mountains and snow (Florida and Texas girl problems). I ended up having to cancel my acceptance of the site - which meant starting the search process alllllllllll over again (yay). So now when I get potential site information, the first thing I do is see what housing looks like in the area.

3. know the difference between a place that wants you to be part of their team and not just a body.

Obviously being a traveler has some degree of being a short timer. HOWEVER, I am not about to burn myself out my being part of a facility or culture that doesn't care. Even though it's only 3 months, I will be giving them my everything and I think that should be reciprocated. An example, one place I spoke with on the phone for an interview told me all about their facility, asked me nothing about me or my experience, and then told me they think I’d be 100% a great fit based on this conversation like whuttttt. Immediately no.

Travel therapy is a journey, but that doesn't mean you are any less valuable that permanent staff - be sure to treat your searches the same way you would a perm job - you are worth it
