4 Job Hunting Red Flags

AKA you better RUN!!

It can be super exciting to want to go head on into the field once we graduate or honestly, when we're looking for a change of pace in our career. BUT BEWARE! Not every place has you (or your clients) best interest at heart. Knowing what red flags to look for will ultimately help you avoid ending up in a job that sucks your soul out of you, makes you frustrated or hate the field you are in.

Here are 4 red flags that I look for when doing my job search:

1. Negative reviews online: Google reviews and Glassdoor can often give you first hand feedback from patients, caregivers or former/current employees about their experience.

2. High turnover rate: I like to ask when the last time someone was hired OR how many clinicians have left in the last year. If there’s a high turnover rate, kinda makes you wonder WHY 👀 And tbh, you should ask them why - sometimes the reasons are not nefarious! It could be because it's a rural area, or people wanted to move back home, etc. Be skeptical but also be open-minded and make a decision based on what you hear.

3. Interviewer doesn’t ask about you or your goals: if they don’t care about you as an applicant, they’re not gonna care about you as an employee - I said what I said 🤷🏽‍♀️ your employer should be investing in you as much as you are investing in them. You are more than a body in a clinic.

4. Lack of clarity about the position: watch out for vague or general answers to your questions or lack of being able to provide an answer. If it seems sketchy RUN 🏃‍♀️ no job is worth sacrificing your mental health and well being over.

What other red flags have you noticed when looking for jobs?

If you’re working, what are some red flags you notice now that you wished you would’ve asked about?
