And how could they? Sure, it gets talked about to some degree but how could they simulate the bond you make with patients who spend days to weeks with you while they recover - like becoming part of their family.
Sometimes our patients pass away in our care, sometimes it's after they go home. Sometimes it's medically related or an unrelated tragic event.
But it breaks your heart - and I don't ever think that part becomes "normal" or something "you get use to"
We had a sweet patient and his momma that passed away a while ago; too soon. He was a very spunky and joy filled kiddo who loved to swim, sing jingle bells and eat a lot of ice cream.
Any time they were in therapy, his mom and him would give this book "Ricky the Rock That Couldn't Roll" to each of his therapists and members of his medical team. It's about how people come together to help others achieve things they want to do that may even seem impossible at times.
I wanted to share it with y'all because who knows, one of you could've been his therapist in the future and have been impacted by his joy. I encourage everyone to read it when you have the chance and think of this sweet boy and his momma
